Copiously undulating ridges encase the rounded stem of this well-named variety, which is accented by white tufts of wool from which starbursts of white to light tan spines emerge. The base coloration of Stenocactus multicostatus ‘Wave Cactus’ is a rich, greyish green, which serves as a lovely backdrop for the large pink blooms that will emerge during the summer months, featuring yellow stamens and deeper pink striping down the length of each petal.
With needs fairly consistent with those of other cactus varieties, ‘Wave Cactus’ should perform well for even novice succulent growers. Bright sunlight is key, as is an infrequent routine of deep watering, allowing the soil to dry through in between drinks. A porous soil mix within a well-draining pot will help shield this specimen from issues such as rot or pests, as will ample airflow around the stem and soil surface. With proper care, each stem will reach up to 5 inches tall and 6 inches wide, before beginning to form offsets around its base.
Hardy only to Zone 9, it is important to shield ‘Wave Cactus’ from freezing weather – though a period of cooler temperatures during the winter months, in the range of 50-60 degrees, will encourage more ample springtime blooms.
