Parodia scopa is a cactus with ball-shaped or short cylindrical stems with a spiny woolly crown and pale yellow flowers that appear in summer. The “Silver Ball” is native to South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Columbia, and Uruguay), and part of the genus notocactus. Like many of the hardy succulents native to South America and the Southwest, these plants are best suited for dry, arid environments. They don’t need a lot of water . These plants can live for many years, but they may not grow very large. They tend to grow in a ball or barrel-shaped and produce brush-like spines. Most people rarely get their cactus ball to grow bigger than 4″ to 6″ inches. After several years, plants may achieve a height closer to one foot. There are also some species of this plant that may only reach three inches and never get any taller.

- Aloe vera is a succulent plant species of the genus Aloe. The plant is stemless or very short-stemmed with thick, greenish, fleshy leaves that fan out from the plant’s central stem. The margin of the leaf is serrated with small teeth.
- Before you buy an aloe, note that you’ll need a location that offers bright, indirect sunlight (or artificial sunlight). Direct sunlight can dry out the plant too much and turn its fleshy leaves yellow, so you may need to water more often if your aloe lives in an especially sunny spot.
- Aloe vera plants are succulents, so use a well-draining potting mix, such as those made for cacti and succulents. Do not use gardening soil. A good mix should contain perlite, lava rock, chunks of bark, or all three.
- Water aloe vera plants deeply, but infrequently. In other words, the soil should feel moist after watering, but should be allowed to dry out to some extent before you water again. If the soil stays overly wet, the plant’s roots can rot.
- Mature aloe vera plants occasionally produce a tall flower spike—called an inflorescence—from which dozens of tubular yellow or red blossoms appear. This certainly adds another level of interest to the already lovely aloe!
- These unique cacti are small in height, but since they grow in a cluster they add color and beauty to your garden experience
- Plant in an area of your garden that gets 6 hours of sunlight a day. If planting indoors, place in a room that gets a lot of sunlight
- This beautiful, small cactus has a cylindrical green body covered in interwoven white spines. “Thimble Cactus” grows in clusters, and propagates very easily. You can expect to see tiny cream-colored flowers in cooler months.
